How to Upload Instagram Reels
Instagram Reels get significantly more reach than regular posts. Here's how to upload Reels from mobile and desktop, plus tips for maximizing engagement.
Instagram has been pushing Reels hard since 2020, and it shows. Reels consistently get more reach than photos, carousels, or Stories. If you're creating short-form video content, Instagram Reels should be part of your distribution strategy.
Whether you're uploading from your phone or desktop, this guide covers the full process—plus the optimization details that separate Reels that get views from Reels that get buried.
Reels Requirements
Duration: Up to 3 minutes (90 seconds or less recommended for Reels tab)
Aspect ratio: 9:16 vertical (1080x1920)
Format: MP4 or MOV
File size: Up to 4GB
Frame rate: 30 fps minimum
Square videos (1:1) also work but don't fill the full Reels viewer. Stick with vertical for the best experience. If you're repurposing content from other platforms, export the original file in 9:16 rather than downloading with watermarks.
Uploading from Mobile
- Open Instagram and tap the + button
- Select Reel
- Tap the gallery icon to upload an existing video
- Trim and adjust the video
- Add music, effects, text, or stickers
- Tap Next, then choose a cover image
- Write your caption and add hashtags
- Tap Share
Mobile is the most common way to upload Reels and gives you full access to Instagram's editing tools, music library, and effects. For pre-edited content, the main advantage of mobile is quick posting—you can go from file to live in under a minute.
Uploading from Desktop
Instagram now supports Reels uploads directly from the web at instagram.com:
- Go to instagram.com and log in
- Click the + icon in the top navigation
- Select your video file
- Choose a cover image and write your caption
- Click Share
For scheduling, use Meta Business Suite or a third-party tool. The basic instagram.com interface only supports immediate posting. Meta Business Suite gives you a calendar view and lets you schedule Reels up to 75 days in advance.

Upload Instagram Reels with ShortSyncHow the Instagram Reels Algorithm Works
Understanding what Instagram prioritizes helps you create Reels that actually get distributed. The algorithm evaluates Reels differently than feed posts:
- -Saves are the top signal: When someone saves your Reel, Instagram interprets it as high-value content worth resurfacing. Saves are weighted more heavily than likes or even comments.
- -Shares amplify reach: Reels shared via DM or to Stories get a significant algorithmic boost. Create content people want to send to friends—relatable, useful, or surprising content gets shared most.
- -Watch-through rate matters: If viewers watch your entire Reel (or rewatch it), the algorithm pushes it to more people. This is why shorter Reels often outperform—they're easier to watch through completely.
- -Non-follower discovery: Instagram now shows Reels to non-followers much more aggressively through the Reels tab and Explore page. Your content can reach far beyond your follower base if the engagement signals are strong.
Cover Images
Your cover image appears on your profile grid and is the first thing people see when browsing your account. A cohesive grid builds credibility and encourages profile visitors to follow.
- -Create custom covers: Design 9:16 covers with bold text and consistent branding. Use your Reel's title or hook as the cover text so people understand the content at a glance.
- -Maintain consistency: Use the same font, color palette, and layout across your covers. This creates a professional-looking grid even if your Reels vary in content.
- -Avoid clutter: Keep cover text to 3-5 words maximum. The thumbnail is small on profile grids—anything more becomes unreadable.
Captions and Hashtags
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but shorter is usually better for Reels. Lead with a hook in the first line—that's what appears before people tap "more."
Caption structure
Start with a hook or question to stop the scroll. Follow with 1-2 sentences of context. End with a call to action—ask a question, prompt saves ("Save this for later"), or encourage shares ("Send this to someone who needs it").
Hashtag strategy
Use 5-10 hashtags mixing popular tags with niche-specific ones. Instagram has moved away from hashtag-heavy discovery, so quality matters more than quantity. Test different combinations and check which hashtags are actually driving impressions in your Insights.
Add captions to the video
Most viewers watch Reels without sound. Adding burned-in captions or using Instagram's caption sticker ensures your message gets across regardless. For a complete walkthrough, see our guide to adding captions to short-form videos.
Instagram Reels Monetization
Instagram's monetization for Reels is less predictable than YouTube's revenue sharing, but there are multiple ways to earn:
Reels bonuses
Instagram periodically offers bonus programs that pay creators based on Reels performance. These are invite-only and not consistently available—Instagram enables and disables them by region. When available, payouts are based on views over a set period.
Brand partnerships
Instagram's biggest monetization advantage is brand deals. The platform is widely trusted by advertisers, and Instagram creators often command higher rates per post than on other platforms. Even micro-influencers with 5,000-20,000 engaged followers can secure paid partnerships.
Instagram Shopping
If you sell products, you can tag them directly in Reels. Viewers can tap to view and purchase without leaving Instagram. This works for physical products, digital products, and affiliate links.
Maximizing Engagement
Post timing
Instagram engagement peaks at lunch (11 AM-1 PM) and evening (7-9 PM) in your audience's timezone. Wednesday and Thursday are consistently the strongest days. Check your Instagram Insights to see when your followers are most active.
Calls to action
Ask questions in your caption. Instagram's algorithm favors posts that generate comments. "What do you think?" or "Tag someone who needs this" works better than nothing. Prompting saves ("Save this for later") is especially effective since saves are Instagram's highest-weighted engagement signal.
Share to Stories
After posting a Reel, share it to your Story. This gives your followers who don't scroll the Reels feed another chance to see it. Stories drive the initial engagement burst that signals the algorithm to push the Reel further.
Engage in the first hour
Reply to every comment within the first hour of posting. This creates conversation threads that boost the Reel's engagement signals. The algorithm evaluates a Reel's performance heavily in the first 30-60 minutes—front-loading engagement matters.
