Post an RSS feed to a Discord channel

New podcast episodes, blog posts or news, straight into your Discord channel. ShortSync reads the feed every 15 minutes and posts each new item with its image, title and link through a channel webhook. The same workflow can post to your other accounts too.

How to set it up

  1. 1

    Connect Discord

In ShortSync, connect Discord with Add to Discord and pick the server and channel on Discord's own screen (you need Manage Server there), or paste a channel webhook from Server Settings > Integrations > Webhooks. No bot joins your server.

  2. 2

    Paste the feed

On ShortSync's Upload page, open Repurpose and create a workflow. Under Post from, pick YouTube or podcast and paste the RSS or Atom feed URL, or a podcast's Apple Podcasts link. ShortSync shows the latest items so you can check it's the right feed.

  3. 3

Pick Discord and how to post

Under Post to, select your Discord account (and any others you want). Choose Publish right away, or Save drafts to check each post first.

  4. 4

    Let it run

About 15 minutes after a new item appears in the feed, ShortSync posts it to Discord. Items from before you created the workflow aren't posted as new.

What the post looks like on Discord

  • A message in the channel you picked, with the image attached.
  • The title on the first line and the link below it, clickable.
  • Sent through the channel's webhook, so it shows the webhook's name and avatar, not a bot account.

Other ways to do it

All of these work. ShortSync suits you if you'd rather not build or host anything, or want the same post on several platforms.

An RSS bot

Dedicated RSS bots handle many feeds per server and often have a free tier. They join your server with their own permissions and are set up per server.

Zapier, Make, Pabbly or IFTTT

Each has a template that watches a feed and posts to the platform. Flexible if you already pay for one, but you build and maintain the workflow and its message yourself, and each extra platform is another step.

Your own webhook script

A feed reader that posts to a Discord webhook is a short script, if you're happy to host it.

Good to know

  • Items need an image or a video to be posted; items with neither are skipped.
  • For podcasts, each episode uses its own artwork, or the show's cover when it has none. Video podcasts post the video.
  • An old posts workflow can work through the items already in the feed, a few a day in the time slots you pick.
  • Messages can be up to 2,000 characters and files up to 10 MB, Discord's limit for servers without boosts.
  • Each Discord channel is its own connection, so one workflow can post to several channels or servers.

Frequently asked questions

No. ShortSync posts through the channel's webhook, which Discord creates when you click Add to Discord (or you make yourself in Server Settings > Integrations > Webhooks).
Not yet: items need an image or a video, because the workflow reposts media. Feeds of podcasts, YouTube channels and most news sites include one.
Any RSS or Atom feed whose items have an image or a video: podcasts (paste the Apple Podcasts link or your host's RSS feed), YouTube channels, news sites and blogs that include images. Spotify listening links don't work, since Spotify doesn't expose a feed; use the RSS feed from your podcast host.
About every 15 minutes. A new item is posted on the next check after it appears in the feed.
Repurposing workflows are on every ShortSync plan, Free included. Each published post counts as one upload on your plan, like posting it yourself; drafts don't count. If you run out of uploads, new posts wait as drafts instead.
